Derry Journal Move to New Offices

Derry Journal Move to New Offices

End of an era as the Derry Journal turns over new page

The last edition of the Derry Journal to be published on the Buncrana Road
One of the oldest newspapers in the world is turning over a new page with a change of premises.

The Derry Journal is leaving the Buncrana Road in the city after over 40 years, and moving to new offices at Pennyburn Pass less than a mile away.

It is only the third time the Journal has moved offices in 240 years.

The first offices were in Shipquay Street where the Richmond Centre is now.

Editor, Martin McGinley, started with the Journal in 1980 and said the paper, like the industry is unrecognisable from that time.

“I was a cub reporter. People might have recognised the newsroom from old films, it was very much like that.

“I sat down to a manual typewriter, I thumped out the story. You took your story and you folded it over and because it was on paper hoped you had a good thick bunch to bring into the editor.”

The Derry Journal holds perhaps the most important archive on the history of the North West and Mr McGinley said experience has taught them to be extremely careful when moving it.

“We will be packing up the archives very carefully today because one of the things that happened when we moved in 1970 from Shipquay Street was that there was an accident and a lot of glass negatives were actually broken, so extra care will be taken with this move.”

Made in Donegal

Made in Donegal

Made in Donegal is a documentary about the local food culture in County Donegal, Ireland and why it is so important to the county’s as well as country’s future.

This film was made by students of Ohio University Documentary and Storytelling in Ireland Program, They’ve put their hearts and souls into an experience they will never forget.

This is what happened behind the camera as we challenged ourselves and produced, shot, and edited our documentary in six weeks.

Tip O’Neill Donegal Diaspora Award

Tip O’Neill Donegal Diaspora Award

More than 80 O’Neills are scheduled to travel from America for the inaugural Tip O’Neill Donegal Diaspora Award in memory of the late former speaker of the US House of Representatives. The clan gathering, starting this Friday 7th September 2012, will take place in Buncrana, Co Donegal, home of O’Neill’s maternal ancestors.

US-based journalist Niall O’Dowd will be the first recipient of the award.

The weekend programme will also include the presentation of Irish-American Partnership bursaries to five local national schools and the first annual Tip O’Neill lecture to be delivered by Prof Paul Arthur.

A sculpture commemorating O’Neill will also be unveiled at Buncrana’s Shore Front by the town’s mayor, James Gill.

O’Neill’s daughter Susan O’Neill said her father’s grandmother Eunice Fullerton was born outside Buncrana, “so this part of the world still resonates as home for many of us”.

She added: “There are over 80 making the trip and this is a great opportunity for members of our family to visit our ancestral home and meet the local community.”

The Gallagher Clan Gathering 2013

The Gallagher Clan Gathering 2013
6th – 14th September 2013

The first global Gallagher gathering took place in Letterkenny, Co Donegal in 2007 — where there over 2,000 Gallaghers appear in the phone book alone!

With Gallaghers coming from as far away as Australia and Alaska, it claimed the Guinness World Record for a “the largest same name gathering” with 1,488 Gallaghers coming together in Donegal.

Although there’s been gatherings of Joneses in Wales since, The Gallaghers continue to reign as King of the Clans and there’s exciting things afoot for 2013. Listen to Adrian Gallagher, ‘King of the Gallaghers’ to find out more.

The 2nd Gallagher Global Gathering will be held in Gortahork,Co.Donegal Ireland from 6th – 14th September 2013. It will be based at the Ostan Loch Altan / Loch Altan Hotel. As with our first in 2007 this gathering will be a memorable occassion for all who attend. Various events will be taking place throughout the week and you can attend all of them or just a selection.
