“Inishowen Landscape in the Spotlight”

at ‘Jewel Box Festival’ exhibition – Moville on Saturday 16th July

Acclaimed Donegal-born painter Sheila McClean will be taking a look back at her celebrated career in a retrospective exhibition at the ‘Jewel Box Festival’ in Moville on Saturday 16 July.
Famed for her beautifully evocative landscape paintings of the sea, mountain, hill and bogland of Inishowen, Sheila’s work includes depictions of such local landmarks as Carrickarory Pier, Moville Pier and Greencastle Pier, as well as Ballymagan in Buncrana.

Sheila explains the particular inspiration which Inishowen offers to her as an artist:

“In painting the landscapes of Inishowen, I suppose I was painting the many moods of our varied and very changeable weather. I would drive around Inishowen until something struck me that I’d like to paint and I would exhaust that area until I had found its secret or failed to do so. On looking back it is interesting to note that the areas that attracted me were those of my ancestors on both sides of my family.”

Sheila is a member of the prestigious Royal Ulster Academy of artists and her work has been bought by a number of high profile collectors, including the Kennedy family in the US and others in Ireland, the UK, New Zealand, Holland and Germany.

When asked about the idea behind the forthcoming festival exhibition, Sheila said:

“When my niece Sarah McGuinness came to me with the idea of exhibiting at the ‘Jewel Box Festival’, which brings together artists of various genres in the beautiful Inishowen landscape which has been so inspirational to me, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to revisit some of my favourite work which hasn’t been seen in public for several years and to introduce it to a new audience.”
