Soul Surfer in Bundoran

Remarkable Hawaiian surfer, Bethany Hamilton, whose life is the subject of new film, is set to attend its Irish premier in Bundoran later this month.

21-year-old Bethany from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, who despite losing her left arm in a shark attack when she was 13-years-old, has gone to become a professional surfer and will attend the premier screening of the film “Soul Surfer” on the opening night of the European Championships being held in Bundoran on September on September 23.

In 2003, Hamilton went for a morning surf at Tunnels Beach on Kauai with friends. While she was lying on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water, a 14 ft tiger shark attacked her resulting in her losing her arm.

“Soul Surfer” tells the story of her ordeal and road to recovery and her return to the water to become a professional surfer.

The Eurosurf 2011 will see teams from all over Europe and North Africa compete in Bundoran over a ten day period later this month.

Also confirmed to play over the competition are Derry rockers the Undertones
