Cruit Island Golf Club

Cruit Island Golf Club

The 9 holes of Cruit Island Golf course were created as recently as 1986 by Michael Doherty, the professional at City of Derry Golf Club. And yet it has the feel of an old style classic links that has been around for generations. The sound of the sea is ever present and the panoramic views from the cliff tops are truly breathtaking.

The golf course is 2,809 yards long and has 7 par fours and 2 par threes. One of the par three’s is the spectacular signature hole played along the cliff edge.

Cruit Island hosts 2 golf competitions in honour of two of the area’s most famous people –  Packie Bonner, the ex international soccer goalkeeper and Daniel O Donnel, the hugely popular Irish singer.

There are a number of holiday homes located on the island available for rental.

Clipper Derry-Londonderry

Clipper Derry-Londonderry

There was a continental atmosphere along Derry’s quays over the past few days. The weather held up well and people turned out in their thousands to see the boats and meet friends along the riverside. On Friday night visitors were delighted to see a spectacular fireworks display.

With Race 14 starting 7th July, the crew taking part in the Clipper 11-12 Race have been using the final few days on dry land to make sure they experience everything Derry-Londonderry has to offer.

Last night crew members of all ten yachts competing in the race attend the ‘Legenderry’ Concert which saw The Undertones headline.

The band from Derry-Londonderry performed to a ‘sell-out’ crowd which had snapped up all 10,000 free tickets. But stars of the show were definitely the crew of the Derry-Londonderry yacht who were introduced on stage to huge cheers.

“Being on stage in front of so many people was absolutely unbelievable,” explains skipper of the Derry-Londonderry yacht, Mark Light.

“The welcome into Derry-Londonderry has been spectacular and we’re all very proud of this city and the local people should be too!”

Race 14, to Den Helder, Netherlands, starts 7th July 1700 local time at Greencastle following a departure ceremony at Foyle Marina in Derry-Londonderry starting at 1130.

The penultimate race of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race is an 800-mile sprint that will see the fleet head north over the top of the British Isles before heading towards their destination of Den Helder.

The Clipper 11-12 Race will finish in Southampton on 22 July 2012.

About Aranmore Island

Arranmore Island, or Árainn Mhór, off the coast of Donegal has been inhabited since prehistoric times and the promontory fort at Uilinn, which dates from about 800BC, still stands on its cliff top perch. Today, the island is a wonderfully peaceful place with a way marked trail leading from sandy beaches to the island’s rocky summit, providing spectacular views of the glittering sea, the cliffs, rock arches and the majestic mainland mountains; from Glen Head to Tory Island.

The crystal clear waters surrounding Arranmore provide great dive sites and sea angling, while the island’s freshwater lakes are home to brown and rainbow trout. Boats for sea angling can be hired and there are abundant cod, ling, conger eel, pollock, wrasse, skate, turbot and plaice.

Birdwatchers will enjoy seeing fulmars and shags and climbers can tackle the steep cliffs. The ferry runs all year from Burtonport making day trips a must and longer visits a well deserved treat. Savour the beautiful and untamed landscape, Gaelic culture, quiet country roads with abundant wildlife, turf fires and lively pubs. During Féile Árainn Mhór (formerly the Rose of Arranmore festival), the island’s annual celebration of music, song and dance, everyone gets a fascinating insight into island culture and the Irish language.

Ramelton is an elegant Georgian town in County Donegal – a county that is better known for its natural attractions. The town was built by Sir William Stewart who is also credited with the establishment of a town in Letterkenny. He was granted some 1,000 acres around the area where the River Lennon flows into Lough Swilly, and built the town, between the years 1609 and 1622, where previously an O’Donnell castle had stood, a castle judged to be “the meetest and most commodious in the area”.

Ramelton’s ‘golden era’ was undoubtedly the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Georgian era which gave it its most beautiful and distinctive buildings. This was a very affluent time for some of the leading families of the town, such as the Watts and the Stewarts, and sail ships regularly traded between Ramelton, New York and Kingstown, Jamaica. Flax was grown locally for the then thriving linen industry. This industry was centered on the Tanyard, a structure and site which can still be seen near the bridge at the west end of the Mall.

Awesome Paragliding Donegal

Awesome Paragliding Donegal

Ricks Brasil goes paragliding amid the spectacular scenery of south west Donegal.

Awesome Paragliding Donegal : The coastline of Glencolmcille is varied and dramatic, embracing as it does huge, sheer cliffs, sea-sculpted rocks and islets, tiny inlets where local fishermen harbour their boats, and sandy, safe beaches. At Malinbeg, with Rathlin o’Beirne Island a mile offshore, marking the Northen entrance to Donegal Bay, we have one of the finest beaches in Ireland, the sandy safe, Silver Strand, while at the North-Eastern extremity of our coast we have Tormore, 482 feet, Ireland’s highest sea stack.

Awesome Paragliding Donegal

In between and along an indented coast lies Teelin (Malinmore) Head, the most Westerly point on the Donegal coast, with Rossan Point close by at the entrance to Glen Bay. At the head of this bay is a good, sandy beach, backed by dunes, with a Car Park and the Folk Museum Centre adjacent. Glen Head rises to a height of 769 feet and is surmounted by its Watchtower. Just North of here is the Sturral, a jagged, knife-edged promontory.

Preserving Authentic Ireland

Preserving Authentic Ireland at The Red Door Fahan

Every Wednesday Night during June July and August

Experiencing Ireland’s cultural heritage is still one of the greatest motivations for tourists to the country. Despite all else that is going on in Ireland, they want to learn about our traditions, lifestyle and what makes the place and people unique. The role of providing this experience lies largely with tourism providers and entering the summer season, we are stepping up to the mark.

One of the most authentic experiences a visitor can have is to sit by the fireside in the evening listening to poetry recitations, old legends and a song or two. The Celtic tradition of storytelling has been around for over 2000 years and people would gather in each other’s houses making their own entertainment to pass the long evenings.

Local musician, painter, writer and genealogist Seoirse O’Dochartaigh helped launch our Wednesday night opening at The Red Door last night with a relaxed evening of music and chat by the open fire in Kate’s Room, the original part of the country house built in 1789. Switching from English to Gaelic throughout poems and songs, Seoirse told how this was how Irish speakers learned English in the past.

Overnight guests from America and Greece said that they had toured to other parts of Donegal before coming to Inishowen but had not encountered such ‘Irishness’ as this. Locals enjoyed finding out about the history of the area and in particular the O’Dochartaigh family name.

Wednesday nights during June, July and August

Seoirse will be at The Red Door every Wednesday Night during June July and August and everyone is welcome. Senior citizens enjoy 10% discount on food on Wednesdays so it is perfect for a night out with a difference during the week. Call 00353 74 9360289 to book but it’s not essential.
